Please Introduce Yourself:

Hello! My name is Jennifer Thompson. I was born in Glenview and when I was five years old, our family moved from the suburbs to a condominium in the city overlooking Oak Street Beach. It was quite a change but my brother and I loved swimming in the building’s rooftop pool and using binoculars to look out of our 15th floor living room to see which of our friends were hanging out at the beach. I attended public schools in the city and eventually studied marketing at the University of Illinois, School of business in Champaign Urbana. I worked in sales in the telecommunications industry until I decided to take some time off and traveled around the world by myself. After returning home, I made a major career pivot and went back to school to earn a Masters degree in Counseling from DePaul University and then became certified as a Master Level Coach through Integral Coaching Canada. I currently live on the North Shore with my husband, John and our two children who are both currently in college (Go Illini, Go Blue!). I love counter balancing work with time for reading & reflecting, walking along Lake Michigan, trying new restaurants, exploring and traveling (I am lucky enough to be writing this today sitting on a terrace overlooking the Swiss Alps in Bern Switzerland – so beautiful!)

What is your job/profession and why are you passionate about it?

I am a Career Development Coach and I design custom Coaching Programs to help people refresh their career priorities, goals and sense of purpose and explore the ways that these yearnings intersect with what the world needs. The framework that I offer is an ‘inside-out’ way of navigating career transitions that creates the space and the structure for clients to tap into their own inner knowing and wisdom to have a more connected, fulfilling and vibrant professional life. One of the things that I love most about my work is the way that creatively igniting career change provides positive impact that ripples out into many different aspects of my clients’ lives.

What have you most enjoyed about being a part of the 818 community?

818 is truly an inspiring place to work. I love the people, the sense of community & connection, the incredible networking events, and the great coffee! The space offers a lot of flexibility with areas to be sociable and collaborative as well as private and quiet areas to work. The design aesthetic, beautiful artwork, and abundance of natural light helps me to be more productive and think more creatively!

What is your life motto?

I am an optimist at heart and one of my favorite quotations is “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm” by Winston Churchill. It speaks to an inner sense of resiliency that keeps me taking inspired action in the face of life’s ups and downs.
